How do you become a future-proof leader?

In a world in constant flux, courageous leadership is becoming increasingly important. Leaders face the task of not only managing complex transformations, but also navigating the pressures of technological advances and societal changes. These changes have a major impact on employees' mental wellbeing, leading to an increase in burnout and absenteeism. In this context, it takes courage to embrace change as an opportunity, rather than a threat. As a leader, how can you make a difference? Here are three powerful tips.

#1 Focus is the new IQ, connection the new EQ

In today's digital world, we see that intelligence (IQ) is the determining factor for success according to many. But focus is the new measure of intelligence. This means that your ability to keep your attention focused on what really matters determines your performance. Without focus, even the highest IQ is of little value because distractions prevent you from realising your full potential.

Focus allows us to achieve depth in our work and relationships. It helps us not only to be more productive, but also to make more conscious choices. When you are able to concentrate fully on one task, you can achieve more with less effort. This applies to both personal performance and leadership: a leader who is focused is better able to guide and inspire his team.

On the other hand, connection is becoming the new EQ - the ability to make meaningful connections. Despite the abundance of digital communication, many people feel lonelier than ever. Real connection goes beyond the number of contacts on LinkedIn; it is about genuine interactions and empathy as well as about connecting with your own drives. A leader with a high EQ is able to cultivate deep relationships with his team and customers. And that, in turn, leads to trust and long-term cooperation.

#2 Go from automatic pilot to authentic pilot

In addition, it is a good idea to convert your ‘automatic pilot’ to the ‘authentic pilot’. Many people tend to go through life on automatic pilot. In doing so, habits and routines guide their behaviour without them being aware of it. These automatic responses are the result of what Daniel Kahneman describes as System 1 thinking: fast, intuitive and often unconscious. While this system allows us to make decisions quickly, it is also prone to errors and biases because it often oversimplifies the complexity of situations.
In contrast, System 2 thinking is slower and more thoughtful. This system is activated when faced with complex problems or when we really need to think about an important decision. System 2 requires energy and effort, but is more reliable and leads to more thoughtful choices.

But how can you activate System 2 and thus your authentic pilot? You have to consciously stop following classic and sometimes well-trodden paths. Instead, you consciously and authentically create ones that align with your values and goals. This type of thinking helps leaders to be innovative and strategic because they are able to think outside established patterns and find innovative solutions.

Now, it takes courage to make this switch. After all, you have to let go of old habits and learn to trust your own judgement. And that sometimes feels uncomfortable. But through this conscious approach, you develop your authentic self. And that is the key to sustainable and courageous leadership.

#3 Leadership is about being present

Finally, what many leaders underestimate is the power of being present. In a world where distractions constantly lurk, the ability to be fully present in the moment is a rare, but valuable, characteristic of leadership. And, of course, this means more than being physically present: it is about offering full attention to others.

Why? Well, leaders who are fully present show their team that they matter. They actively listen, ask the right questions and give their full attention to the task or conversation in front of them. Within teams, this creates trust and commitment. Those who are present as leaders without being constantly distracted by notifications are able to make deep connections. And to show empathy for the needs of their team members.

Just know that leadership is not about ‘being busy’ or constantly handling multiple tasks at once. Multitasking is a myth! Instead, it is about cultivating gravitas - a sense of calm, focus and authority. Leaders know what to do, therefore, if they want to boost performance, wellbeing and creativity within their organisations!
